The gender roles in a society often depend on the history or religion of its people. These roles are often strictly applied and its effects are widespread, influencing the peoples’ self-perceptions, behaviors, and interpersonal functioning(1). The effects of gender roles still prevail in times of war. In a patriarchal society, boys, like the men they will become, are placed in positions as soldiers. A common belief is that men must provide protection to women, also known as protective paternalism(1). |
